Aural plaques are gray to white crusty growths that form on the inside of one or both ears. They are caused by a type of equine papillomavirus that is similar but genetically different from warts on the muzzle and warts found on the penis. There are a few untested treatments and these should be considered only when these become uncomfortable for the horse. I have had them become very painful and completely fill the space formed by the ear. With anesthesia they were able to be de-bulked but soon they returned.
