Banking the bedding against the sides of the stall is a bad idea because it leaves only a small area for the horse to lay down.  While this may prevent the horses from becoming cast (stuck against the wall) it also stresses the horse mentally and physically.  Add a casting rail if that is a problem.  Add bedding when needed and don’t stack it in advance by banking it in the stall.
