Cross ties - the tennis ball allows for the tie to be dropped against the wall without the noise and damage caused by the metal snap without the ball. ALSO - he snaps are quick release, though many grooms add break away string or yarn here too.

Cotton ear plugs are commonly used by grooms and riders to help the horse remain focused. They are also made of foam rubber and can be colored to hide their presence.

Long handle rope twitch. The gallon jug was included to show the relative size. This twitch is used for horses that rear but many people prefer these for everyday use.
Cross ties are another way of applying a direct connection to the horse though it is not a connection to you. It does, though. Provide a degree of safety when working on a horse that is far safer than no halter and lead. That said, you must remain vigilant to the horses as I know of many people severely injured by a horse in cross ties.
