An 18 year old horse who died at 24 years without any problems from these angled incisor teeth. His tounge would exit the mouth on one side and then the other creating this V shape.

Horse M - 303 malformed. It looks more like a cheek tooth. The soft tissue between 302 and 303 is inflammed and raw but has no odor and is not painful. The tongue cannot reach this area to clean it but the tooth has been smoothed indicating she has tried. Plan - either remove it (surgery with not improvement in mare's condition) or leave it (it's not bothering her, it may self resolve as she erupts more over time, or it will be easier to extract when the soft tissue deteriorates more

Underbite of a 4 yr old Percheron mare. Also the incisors are misaligned and there is bunching of the gum tissue around the lower incisors caused by the tongue's movement. This movement is also causing a clean labial surface and a thinning of the labial enamel.

The labial surface of these incisors have a black coating of unknown origin. I usually associate this with a legume pasture (clover, alfalfa) but the owner did not know the content of her pastures over the years. Also notice the white areas on the 2's where the tongue has worn away or prevented the black deposit.

An absent 203, a retained decidulous cap remains and the upper canine has erupted next to the corner incisor cap.

The atrophied right cheek muscle and the limited ability to open the mouth (see previous images) has caused the incisors to wear unevenly. The condition of the cheek teeth are unknown as even with potent pain medication, the mouth opens only wide enough to insert the float but not wide enough to examine with fingers or visually.

Underbite with an unusual wear pattern. Note the white lower central incisors where the tonge constantly licks while the darker stained teeth have no tongue movement. This horse's tongue goes out and down only. It is also pushing the gum line down at the root causing a receeding line and a bunching of the gum into a ridge.

The black staining of these incisors is not a problem. I associate this with eating forages with clover. The stain is absent where the tongue wipes against the surface. This indicates that the tongue is unrestricted in movement, usually limited by sharp, painful enamel points.
401 and 402 are discolored throughout the tooth but otherwise, these teeth seem healthy.
