Ascarid found in this 4 yr old's manure. Dewormed 2 weeks ago but had been showing and stabled at a trainer with overcrowded conditions - about 60 horses on 20 acres. The stress of shipping to a trainer with overcrowded conditions, shipping to horse shows, young age, and inadequate parasite control led to this parasite infection.

These long hairs are commonly found from under the jaw and down the neck to between the front limbs. These are not to be confused with breeds that normally have long hairs. These are long hairs where the rest of the body hair is shedding.

Here I am pulling on these long hairs and they are not coming out - in fact it hurts the horse - but the shorter hairs that are shedding easily come out.

You can see the long hairs on the neck and scattered over the rest of the body. Also note the poor overall quality of the hair coat - dull and lacking luster. Also note a poor top line and a large abdomen which are signs of a chronic protein deficiency.
