Suture periostitis. Presumptive - the vet looking at this horse did not know what these lumps across the face at eye level were nor did his x-rays help him identify them. They were spontaneous with no external indication of trauma in this 11 year old warmblood gelding. The skull is made of flat bones (as opposed to round bones with marrow inside) and where they come together are called suture lines. The cause is unknown though trauma is most likely followed by bone instability for an unknown reason. They are non-painful and often go away over time.

These hard but non-painful lumps are located directly under where the saddle presses against the body on both sides of the horse. These usually are caused when a tiny blood vessel ruptures when the horse is hot and the pressure and weight of the rider and saddle is suddenly removed. A prevention is to keep the saddle loosely girthed while the horse cools off. The weight of the saddle will prevent the rapid expansion and rupture of these vessels.
