A plaque of pitting ventral edema caused by purpura hemorrhagica secondary to a strangles vaccination several years ago. Purpura hemorrhagica is a blood disorder that can cause petechiae (small red spots seen under the upper lip and gums) in the early onset followed by swelling (edema) of the head and limbs. In this case the edema settled in the abdomen and thorax.I did my senior seminar at vet school on immune mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis secondary to strangles in a horse that first developed purpura hemorrhagica with petechiae and edema of the head while grazing. The head swelling disappeared in the stall when the hay was place high but then the edema followed gravity to this location and the limbs.
