There are 2 lesions here. The large one is of unknown cause but is a few days old. The yellow border is normal healing of the oral mucosa. The smaller red area ventral to the cut is probably bruising from the altered bit position. This may have been from hand walking with a chain with pressure against very sharp teeth, but it is uncertain.

This was an incidental finding during routine floating.  The thickening of the tissue and margins of this gum wound indicates that this is a few days old. While there is debris in the wound there is no indication of infection as it is bathed in saliva with antibodies.  I presume that this will heal without problems.  The horse had no difficulty chewing.
