A stropping kit sold to men to sharpen their straight razors. An antique here but I can still get a new kit today. The tongue acts like the strop and sharpens the edges of the over erupted enamel into a razor edge.

ETORH horse 5 - 1 year after extractions - BCS is a 6. Gums are very healthy. Remaining 403 is solid and non-painful.Notice the tongue hangs out of the mouth because there are no incisors to keep it in. It is this pressure that forces the incisors of older horses to move out and to become long in the tooth.

Callouses on the tip of the tongue that don't bother him.
Large ulceration on the tongue along with a smaller cut. The underside of the tongue also has an abrasion. These marks are consistent with a horse that bit his tongue accidentally. This can happen when they are surprised while the tongue is out between the incisors.

Black discolorations is often found on the tongue in north America in the summer. I am suspicious of a plant such as clover but this is an incidental finding and only a concern to the owner.

Tongue lacerations.
Underbite with an unusual wear pattern. Note the white lower central incisors where the tonge constantly licks while the darker stained teeth have no tongue movement. This horse's tongue goes out and down only. It is also pushing the gum line down at the root causing a receeding line and a bunching of the gum into a ridge.
Underbite of a 4 yr old Percheron mare. Also the incisors are misaligned and there is bunching of the gum tissue around the lower incisors caused by the tongue's movement. This movement is also causing a clean labial surface
Needle horse - A needle found in the tongue of this horse. I was taught that a lump is a lump until proven otherwise (only diagnostics can tell what is the cause of a lump). I had noticed this at yesterday’s float and this is the text the next day from the owner. The horse had developed a fever and the lump was enlarging.
Needle horse - An X-ray of this horse shows a thin white line within the soft tissue of the (dark gray) tongue.
Needle horse - The owner’s picture with an arrow drawn showing the lump on the tongue.
Needle horse - The hypodermic needle removed from the tongue. The horse recovered well after this.
This horse was floated 2 months prior but developed chewing difficulties recently. Exam of the mouth revealed this hard and painful white lump (in the circle) on the ventral part of the free tongue. This is either an acute scar from trauma or an abscess from a foreign object. The owner was going to pursue a diagnosis with their local vet.
A lacerated tongue in a horse with extremely sharp teeth with a sudden history of being unable to chew without difficulty. Floating the cheek teeth resolved this immediately.
The black staining of these incisors is not a problem. I associate this with eating forages with clover. The stain is absent where the tongue wipes against the surface. This indicates that the tongue is unrestricted in movement, usually limited by sharp, painful enamel points.
Tongue frenulum damage from power dentistry. About 3 days after.
