Foal umbilicus at 2 ½ months. Dry and OK with ultrasound exam. Not painful and not draining so it is not infected. This will eventually dry up and disappear but the hernia may need correcting in the future. I do not do surgery on umbilical hernias but instead wrap them (see other images and video).

Small umbilical hernia in a foal
Foal A - Umbilical hernia before wrapping. It is almost 2 fingers in diameter which is a relative way of measuring. The finger tips are pressed into the mass until the hole in the abdominal muscle is felt and then measured by the number of finger tips that can be inserted.

Foal A - 1st wrap with 3 inch Elastikon® (needed 4 inch but was not available so this lasted 2 days). Note the figure 8 pattern of wrapping where the middle of the 8 is over the hernia and the ends of the 8 are placed at the top line as far from each other as possible. See the video of the wrapping.
Foal A - This is 6 days after the first wrap and you can see the reduction in the size of the hernia. The hernia was gone after about 2 weeks of wrapping.
