A filled vein from a thrombosis (occluding blood clot) from an unknown cause.
I believe this is a vein thrombosis (a blockage in the flow of blood in a vein causing the blocked blood fo enlarge the vessel) but is undiagnosed. This was seen at a veterinary university where it was diagnosed as a blocked salivary duct by ultrasonography. They dissolved the blockage (by ultrasound I presume) but it did not resolve this swelling. It fluctuates in size but not by much. The owner has not investigated this any further and it does not seem to bother the horse. There was plenty of saliva in the mouth while floating.
